In this Peace Parks TV episode, we learn about Maputo National Park’s new coastal landmark. The recently constructed lifeguard tower in the Ponta do Ouro area has been designed as an information, inspection and drowning prevention post.
Designed by Peace Parks’ Conservation Planner Johalize Koch, this facility acts as a beach-based hub for registering marine activities, issuing licenses and ensuring safety in the local area. Trained lifeguards are stationed at the post to prevent and respond to drowning incidents and monitor beach and ocean activity.
This rich coastal region of Ponta do Ouro forms part of the Maputo Environmental Protection Area, which also incorporates Maputo National Park. Peace Parks is working with @Mozambique’s National Administration for Conservation Areas (ANAC) to jointly restore, manage and develop this land- and seascape, alongside expert partners, funders and donors providing technical and financial support for conservation and tourism development activities. The Ponta do Ouro area is flourishing, with infrastructure developments and local employment providing significant and increasing benefits to community livelihoods and well-being, as well as the capacity to adapt to climate change.
As demand grows, the park has the flexibility to allocate resources for similar installations at other strategic locations. The construction of this crucial facility, supported by ANAC and Peace Parks, was made possible through financing provided by MozBio.
Investing in the safety and conservation of our coastal havens is a shared responsibility. Be sure to admire the new coastal landmark on your next visit to Maputo National Park, and enjoy the benefits to tourists of the park’s developments! Discover more to explore at parquemaputo.gov.mz .
