In this heartwarming PeaceParks.TV episode, we visit Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary, the world’s largest sanctuary for orphaned rhinos.
At the sanctuary, orphaned baby rhinos that have been rescued receive around-the-clock care, including bottle feeding, medical treatment and protection – the nurturing support they need to thrive.
Through generous funding from Animal Friends Pet Insurance, Peace Parks Foundation is proudly supporting Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary’s operational costs for six months.
As the young rhinos are rehabilitated, they are gradually reintroduced into larger protected areas, where they remain carefully monitored by dedicated caretakers – some of whom remain in the bush with the rhinos. When they are ready, the rhinos are released into a wider reserve under the watchful eye of an advanced security network that includes a canine unit, mounted patrols and a 24-hour operations centre.
But the support provided by Care for Wild doesn’t stop at wildlife. Much like Peace Parks, they understand that conservation without involving the community is incomplete. They therefore run several impactful initiatives to empower the local community, including education programmes for local schoolchildren and a soccer programme. Special events are hosted in the sanctuary, allowing people to spend the day and get involved with the important work being done. The sanctuary also employs local people to help run their vegetable farm sustainably.
