Healthy coastal ecosystems help protect biodiversity, strengthen resilience to climate change and support the livelihoods of coastal communities.
In Maputo National Park, partners are restoring these natural systems along the Maputo Bay coastline by removing invasive species and reintroducing indigenous vegetation to degraded dune areas.
What began as a 400 m² pilot at Ponta do Ouro has expanded into a one-hectare restoration programme. As native vegetation returns, it is restoring ecological function, strengthening natural coastal defences and creating sustainable employment for local communities.
This work is being undertaken through the Prosper Azul project, funded by the European Union and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), as well as the Blue Action Fund together with their implementing partners. The initiative is delivered in collaboration with Mozambique’s National Administration for Conservation Areas (ANAC), Maputo National Park and Peace Parks Foundation.
Discover how restoring coastal ecosystems is helping protect both people and nature along Mozambique’s coastline.
